Vox pops

Calling anyone with a video camera or video phone and something to say about information technology and higher education.  Prizes of a $200 voucher – choice of Apple Store, Amazon, David Jones, or Red Balloon – for the 10 people submitting the best vox pops to use at the conference.

The conference theme is The Game Has Changed, and to illustrate different aspects of this theme we would like to create and screen video clips prior to and at the conference composed of a series of vox pops.

What are the vox pops?

The intention is to get insights from a range of students, IT staff, librarians, teaching and learning practitioners, academic staff, researchers, and admin staff about how technology has influenced education and what the future holds.

The vox pops should be short and punchy and around 20 seconds in duration. They will then be edited together into clips of approximately 2 minutes long. Each clip will also contain the conference logo and theme.

The video style of the vox pops is modelled on a news-style format with a medium close-up or close-up of the interviewee and preferably shot on HD with good clear audio. The location of the interviews can range from campus lawns, offices, labs, lecture theatres and other suitable university spaces.

Check out the examples below:

How do I make one?

First, watch the examples to get some ideas.

Then grab a video camera or video phone.  Find a student, researcher, lecturer, IT staff member, librarian, educational developer, or anyone you think might have something insightful, provocative, prophetic, or just honest to say on the subject.  (And who is willing to let you interview them.)  Yes, it can be yourself!

Ask them one of the following questions and video the response, or make up your own question that you think is interesting.

  • How do you think technology will change the way you do your job in the next 5 years?
  • How do you think technology will change the way students learn in the next 5 years?
  • What technologies does a student expect to be available at their university?
  • What makes you most excited about the way technology is changing universities?
  • What terrifies you the most about the way technology is changing universities?
  • What kind of skills will people need to do their jobs in the next 5 years?

Edit the clip down so that it is a maximum of 30 seconds in length.

What format does it need to be in?

The most important thing is that it shouldn’t be any longer than 30 seconds.  We can work with most common video formats.  HD is preferred.

How do I send it to you?

If it’s less than 5 MB, you can just email it to us at ccaea@caudit.edu.au.  Otherwise upload it to a location of your choice and send us the link so we can download it.  For example, you could use DropBox.

Please include the following information:  your name, your organisation and title, your email address, your phone number.  It is also helpful if you tell us the name, title, and organisation of the person appearing in the video clip.

By participating, you are acknowledging and agreeing that we may show the video clip at the conference, make it available to conference attendees and other interested parties, and upload it to the public CCA-EDUCAUSE YouTube channel.

Can I enter more than one?

Yes, you can enter as many as you like.  However, each video clip should be a separate file of no more than 30 seconds.

What is the deadline?

Please send us all video clips by 18 March 2011.

There was something about a prize?

If your clip is among the best you could win one of 10,  $200 vouchers to your choice of Apple Store, Amazon, David Jones, or Red Balloon!
